Directory submission is an important part of a successful linking strategy and search engine optimization and marketing project. Unlike search engines that spider the Web and do not require site submissions to find your website, you do need to manually submit to a directory. It is also important to submit to the right directories. Listing in the wrong directory or the wrong category in a directory can actually hurt your site ranking in the major search engines, instead of helping.
Many search engines look at the number of relevant links from other websites, like directories, when ranking sites in the search results. Google is well know for this and assigns a site Page Rank based on the number and quality of links coming into your website.
Directory submission involves manually submitting your site URL, title and site description to the best and most relevant category in that particular directory. The title and description you use in one directory may not be the same as you would want to use in another. Understanding the guidelines for site submissions for each directory is essential. Submission rules vary between different directories and following those rules will ensure your site is accepted, especially in human edited directories like the Open Directory and Yahoo! Directory.
